If your key issue isn’t an emergency but you notice your car key is starting to malfunction, we recommend checking if a simple battery replacement in the key fob solves the problem. However, if replacing the battery doesn’t work, it might be time to consider getting a new car key made.
There are several reasons why your key might not be working properly, with one of the most common being damage to the key chip. General Motors started implementing transponder (chip) keys in their cars in 1997, enhancing vehicle security against theft with this technology. Physical damage to the key, such as water exposure or a hard drop, can damage the internal circuitry, making the car key non-functional.
Is It Possible to Reprogram Your Chevy/GMC/Buick Key?
Transponder keys contain a tiny microchip that communicates with the car’s engine control unit (ECU). Transponder keys have a unique electronic code that must match the code programmed into the vehicle’s ECU. If the key stops working and won’t start the car, it could be due to the key’s chip malfunctioning. Once a transponder key stops working, it generally cannot be reprogrammed because the key’s electronic circuitry has likely failed. Also, the security protocols in the ECU may prevent reprogramming of the same key to protect against theft. In such cases, a new key needs to be cut and programmed.

To get an accurate quote, provide your auto locksmith with the year, make, and model of your vehicle. Additionally, mention any other issues, such as separate keys for the door and ignition or special key features which can vary depending on the vehicle trim like remote start or push-button start.
Typically, vehicles from these brands made before 2010 have separate keys and remotes. Some models might not have keyless entry remotes; you can verify this by checking for a keyhole on the front passenger door. For a transponder key/remote, car locksmiths usually charge from $150.
